Description

The turbulent 20th Century History of Greece has many significant events that characterize its shocking violence, its surprising U-turns and its catastrophes, as seen and lived through by its ethnic citizens. It also has a wealth of magnificent and picturesque places that are the subject of unique and compelling stories, creating all together the colorful mosaic of the Greek nation. The small island of Castellorizo, on the edge of the Aegean Sea is hailed by historians and sociologists alike as the unprecedented champion of historical turmoils, upheavals, tensions and ricochets. All the while being regarded as an undisputed beauty spot in that part of the world.

In this documentary, Castellorizo’s history is recorded from its full peak at the end of 19th century, through its period of occupation, migration, and its incorporation into Greece in 1948. The struggles the people of Castellorizo endured, were faced with courage, tenacity, and a rich tradition upheld against all odds. In this context, the island’s unique geography made it in turns, a victim and an actor of its destiny.

Based on diaries, letters and interviews, the film looks in a creative way at it’s great cultural, historic and economic heritage. Through the narrations of some of the better known Castellorizians, it pays tribute to the many remarkable achievements of the inhabitants of this small, beautiful and almost forgotten island at the fringe of Greece
