A vital French cultural figure is at the heart of this documentary: the schoolteacher. He desperately tries to save his young students from a life of marginalization, but is encumbered with outworn, traditional teaching methods that are no longer effective. Admiration, fear and trust are all part of the complex relationship between Vincent H. and the students of this experimental class at a technical high school in Blanquefort, near Bordeaux in southern France. Instead of trying to conquer the current pedagogical crisis through a ‘friendly teacher’ approach, this documentary takes a hard look at a crucial moment of adolescent life, which can make or destroy a student’s professional future. Shot over the entirety of a school year, including glimpses of the students receciving practical training with their future employers, this remarkable film also includes interviews with the students’ parents, who are the hidden shadows of their children’s futures.
